Art Show at Harrison’s Cafe’ in June

'The Artist at Work' is one of Wildauer's pieces on display at Harrison's Cafe' during June

Hoffman Center board member, Vera Wildauer, is showing new work at Harrison’s Cafe’ in Wheeler during the month of June.  Titled ‘Every Portrait A Story’, the show features mixed media pieces with a person as the central image.

“I’ve used photos, old and new, many of them simply throwaway snapshots, rather than formal portraits,” says Wildauer.  “They each, though, evoke something that might be going on in the scene.”  The photos are manipulated and transferred onto board or plaster, and then painted.  In many of the pieces, she also included pages from a thesaurus she had in college.  The book was tattered, but she just couldn’t bear to throw it away.

For an added twist, Wildauer also included tiny stories–420 characters or less, including spaces–to the display.  “The stories are made up.  Sort of,” adds Wildauer.

Stop by Harrison’s in Wheeler to check out the show:  Thursday through Monday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Scholarship Established for Local Writer

Summer in Words, an annual writing conference on the Oregon coast is now affiliated with the Hoffman Center in Manzanita. As part of this affiliation, funds are being raised so that Holly , a Hoffman Center instructor, can attend the conference. Additionally, a raffle sponsored by the conference will support the Hoffman Center, including their summer arts camp where Lorincz will be teaching writing to teens.

The amount for her scholarship is $265. If additional funds are raised SIW will also offer Lorincz a manuscript critique by a developmental editor. In addition, raffle items related to writing are being accepted, with a special interest in a local business offering a writer’s retreat lodging on the Oregon coast.

Holly Lorincz grew up on the Columbia River and now lives on the north Oregon coast. She taught high school language arts for 15 years at Neah-Kah-Nie High School while at the same time coaching an award-winning speech and debate team. She was the Oregon Speech Educator of the year in 2007 and has twice received Outstanding Educator awards from the National Federation of High Schools. She helped the speech team grow from zero to forty members in a school with 200 students, achieved three State Championships with seven of her competitors earning individual State Champion trophies, and served on the Oregon Speech & Debate State Committee Board for ten years.

Two years ago, Holly was forced to leave teaching when she contracted mononucleosis. The underlying Epstein Barr Virus has morphed into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, leaving her to battle physical and mental fatigue — a language arts specialist with a virus attached to her communications and short-term memory. No longer able to teach, she redefined herself as a novelist. Sometimes able to write only a sentence a day, sometimes a paragraph, but she writes. She dabbles in short story and poetry, loves writing children’s books with her six year old Auggie, and recently finished her first fiction novel, Smart Mouth.

Textile Designer to Speak at Hoffman Center

Textile designer Susan Webb-Rebecchi to speak on Tuesday, June 19

Award-winning designer Susan Webb-Rebecchi will give a presentation on textile design and manufacturing at the Hoffman Center in Manzanita Tuesday, June 19 at 6 p.m.

The talk should be of particular interest to fabric artists and designers, quilters, and all other involved with fabrics.

The event will be a fundraiser for the Center. Admission will be $7.00.

With 35 years of experience in the field, Webb-Rebecchi will detail the processes she follows, including a display of initial sketches, painted artwork, and the finished textiles. She will also share the sources of her design inspiration, insights about the manufacture of couture home furnishings sold through interior designers, and a brief history of international textile design.

A graduate of Taft High School in Lincoln City and Oregon State University, Webb-Rebecchi completed her education at the Chicago Art Institute. After realizing that fine art and a stable career could be combined in the textile industry, she moved to New York City, where she worked in the studio of the prestigious French firm Brunschwig and Fils.

Ten years later she decided to work independently and to license her own designs. Webb-Rebecchi has led field trips to Italy and India in search of design inspiration.

PAPER MOSAIC WORKSHOP SET TO INSPIRE LOCAL TRASH ARTISTS

Local artist Kathleen Larson is a master at turning trash (recycled and reclaimed materials) into art. Her whimsical mosaics regularly sell at the annual Trash Art Show and in local galleries. Migrating from pottery shards to scraps of paper, Kathleen has perfected the paper mosaic technique and she is offering to teach others in her upcoming workshop: “Paper Mosaics” on Saturday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hoffman Center.

Kathleen will teach the basics of paper mosaic and participants will leave with a picture frame or decorated box. She will provide all of the materials and encourages participants to also bring their own. Participants can either choose to retain their works of art or enter them in the upcoming 14th Annual Trash Art Show—a fundraiser for CARTM and Hoffman Center.

The workshop is limited to 10 and tuition is $25 which includes materials. All proceeds from the workshop benefit CARTM and Hoffman Center. To save a space, call 503-368-4772 or kstarr@nehalemtel.net.
