Bid on Creative Experiences at Hoffapalooza

washboard for webCome to Hoffapalooza on September 3rd from 1 to 4 pm and bid on a Creative Experience for yourself and three friends.

These generous instructors are donating their time to allow you and your friends to have a fun, creative experience together.  Your choices are either an Intro to the Wheel or Handbuilding class in the Clay Studio, Botanical Drawing, or Assembling and Learning to Play your own Washboard.  This will be a fun way to bring the arts to life for you and your friends.

Proceeds from these workshops will go toward operations at the Hoffman Center for the Arts.  See details below.



Intro To Clay


Together your group may choose ONE of the classes listed below.

Learn basic clay art principles, including slab building, an introduction to the studio’s equipment, how to shape and join clay, and create textures. There is plenty of hands-on practice time to build your cylindrical hand-formed vessel in this class.

This introduction to the the studio’s throwing equipment will cover basic clay art and throwing principles. You will learn how to center clay, pull a cylinder and a bowl, and receive enough instruction to set you on your way for practicing, as well as plenty of hands-on time.

These workshops include three pounds of clay and two hours of instruction, plus use of all tools needed. The fee also includes up to two hours (in one session only) for glazing and kiln firing of your work.  If additional work is needed, or you are already hooked, the cost for follow-up work time at the studio is only $2 per hour and additional clay is available for $1.50 per pound.

Botanical Drawing


You and your friends will learn the fundamentals of botanical drawing using pencils, color pencils and other dry media to portray accurate shapes and master shading techniques to create  three-dimensional effects.

Haber-Legigh is an artist, educator, linguist and forager with a passion for native plants who finds infinite inspiration in nature. She lives in Seaside and is a member of the Oregon Botanical Artists, American Society of Botanical Artists and Oregon Native Plant Society.

In addition to the 2-hour long session with your three friends, the purchaser of this item will receive copies of Haber-Lehigh’s two coloring/reading books:  Native Berries of the Coastal Pacific Northwest and Haystack Rock

Intro To Washboard


Have you ever wanted to put together your own washboard and then learn how to play it? Well, here’s your opportunity!

In this unique workshop you’ll assemble your own washboard to your preference and personalize it with various found objects. Then you’ll learn the basic principles of how to play the washboard.

This two-hour workshop includes assembly and decoration of your washboard in the first hour and learning to play it in the second.

Materials provided include: a small Dubl-Handi washboard, a cowbell, a desk bell and a wooden block. Found objects to decorate your washboard will also be provided, but feel free to bring your own.

Hoffapalooza set for Saturday, September 3rd

hoffa poster final final vw Hoffman Center for the Arts in Manzanita will celebrate its 12th anniversary with an open house on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, from 1 to 4 at the Center.

Come out for a tour, talk to volunteers involved in the various activities, both long-running and new. Representatives will be available at information displays to answer questions you have about programs: Film Series, Manzanita Writers’ Series, the North Coast Squid Literary Journal, Clay Studio, Music Events, and The Art of Aging, Art of Dying Series.

Hoffapalooza will include an art show by Clay Studio Artists, and displays from the Word & Image event, Film Series, and art by students who have taken visual arts classes held at the Center during the past year. You’ll also get to watch artists demonstrate their craft.

Step into the Clay Studio for more demonstrations. In the Writing Lounge area, try your hand at “On-the-Spot-Poetry,” magnetic poetry, to be published. All magnetic poetry will be photographed and included in a book for sale as a fundraiser.

Refreshments and cold beverages will be served at the open house.

Leading up to September 3, raffle tickets for a variety of prizes will be on sale every Friday from 5 to 8, in front of Polaris Art Gallery, on Laneda near the Farmer’s Market, as well as at HCA events. Raffle tickets will be available throughout the day on September 3d as well.
