Is there a bare spot above the dining table? Then, check out the second annual Transplant Your Art sale. The Hoffman Center will hold the Sale on Sunday, September 5, 2010 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the main building on 594 Laneda Avenue in Manzanita. Community members have donated their unwanted, but still wonderful, art pieces to the Center. All types of media will be for sale—original or reproduction–, including paintings, photography, posters, prints, textiles, and sculpture. Selected items will be sold via silent auction and the remainder will be available for outright sale. All of the sale’s proceeds will go to the Hoffman Center’s remodeling fund.

The Hoffman Center Reference Library collection is now online for you to browse from your computer. For directions on how to logon click here.

At this time special arrangements need to be made to visit the library, but with enough interest we may have open hours on a regular basis. Studio artists in the Hoffman house may use the library at any time.

Books are tagged and are searchable by categories, including Art Education, Art History, Drawing, Sculpture, Painting, Ethnic Art, Graphic Arts, Printmaking, etc.

Remember that this is a Reference Library, not a Lending Library, so books may be used in the library or in the foyer of the Hoffman house, but must be returned to the shelf when you are finished with them.

Please email Peggy Biskar for more information

Award winning artist Audene Jay will lead a three-week “Fearless Drawing” course at the Hoffman Center in Manzanita in July. Class sessions will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2 to 4 p.m., beginning July 13 and running through July 29. Classes will be held in the Hoffman House Studios at 595 Laneda Avenue, in Classroom 7.

Jay described Fearless Drawing as “a course for complete beginners or anyone wishing to improve their drawing skills,” and will teach artists to draw what they see with confidence. “You’ll learn the skills to see as an artist sees, which is the key to drawing with ease,” she added.

The course is limited to eight students and costs $199. The curriculum has a beginning and an end, so a commitment to six sessions, at two sessions per week, is needed to give students the full benefit. Preregistration is required. A $40 materials fee is due at the first class.

Click here to download and complete the Fearless Drawing registration form. More information about the classes can be obtained from Jay at 503-368-6901 or audene.artist@gmail.com.

Audene Jay is a full-time coastal resident. Before settling on here she traveled full-time across the United States for four years. During her travels she concentrated on photography and put her artwork in storage. “I am so deeply inspired by the North Coast and am looking forward to meeting new people in the arts and getting back to my first love — drawing and painting,” she said.

Jay was a scholarship recipient at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Houston and also attended The Advertising Arts College in San Diego, where she received a scholarship based on her work and graduated with a Communications degree. She was a gallery artist in Houston for a decade. She is also a poet and performance artist with a one-person show entitled “Little Secrets We Call Ourselves” performed at several Houston venues.

Cathi Howell, artist and arts educator, will lead a series of workshops Monday, July 5th through Friday, July 9th. The workshops will be held at the Hoffman Center at 594 Laneda Avenue in Manzanita.

Part-time 15 year Manzanita resident Cathi Howell will put on an arts curriculum that emphasizes short, one-day creative art projects. The classes will last from 9 to 11 each morning that week. Each class will feature a different technique, including simple printmaking processes, collage, simple sculpture from recycled materials, and self-portraits. No art experience is necessary. This is not technical art training, however experienced artists are welcomed. Students can attend just one or two of the classes—they cost just $20 each, or sign up for the entire week and get a discounted rate of $85. Students get a special discounted rate of $10 per class.

Cathi Howell is a retired arts educator, arts entrepreneur, and studio artist. Currently she teaches an arts program for Rosemary Anderson High School in Portland Oregon several hours each week. She was one of the founding board members of the Hoffman Center.

Lori Dillon, local artist, will lead a three-day workshop called “Exploring Embedded Imagery.”

“I’ll help you combine your own stories and symbols with a variety of materials,” she says. “It’s a multi-media workshop that will change the way you think about your visual art.”

Lori’s love of the outdoors and color show in her artwork. Art classes through high school and a two-year vocational Graphic Arts course honed her skills. More recently, she has attended several classes at the Sitka Center for Arts and Ecology in Otis, Oregon. This resulted in her current passion for mixed media pieces.

Dillon has participated with and displayed artwork at CART’M’s annual Trash Bash, the Manzanita Creative Arts Council’s (MCAC) Annual Summer Show, and the Tillamook County Arts Network’s (TCAN) many events. This past December she had a successful month-long display of mixed media works at Manzanita News and Espresso. You can also see samples of her work using embedded imagery technique at the 4th Street and Sea Level galleries in Manzanita, and at the Harrison Cafe’ in Wheeler.

Active in the arts community, Dillon serves on the boards of the MCAC and TCAN. Both groups promote local artists.

“Although I have shared my techniques with friends on an informal basis, this will be my first formal class. We are going to have fun!”

The class will be held over three days, Tuesday, April 27, through Thursday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will be working on several pieces at a time and by the end will go home with 3 to 5 completed works. Most supplies will be included in the $120 tuition, but students will be given a list upon registering. Have a question? Call Lori at 503.368.6153. Limited to 6 participants, so register soon!

To register, print and fill out this registration form.

The event will teach glazing and firing techniques. It will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Each student will be provided his or her own bank. When the decorating is done, the banks will be fired in the Center’s kiln and returned to their creators by Friday afternoon – the end of spring break.

The workshop is made possible by a grant from the Bank of Astoria. “We are pleased they agreed to sponsor the PlayShop,” said Center president David Dillon. “Banks and piggy banks sure go together.”

The workshop is open to all ages, but a parent or guardian should accompany any student under 6. Bruce Phillips, a Hoffman Center Open Clay Studio volunteer and mentor, will lead the event.

The tuition for the piggy bank PlayShop is $10. Some partial or whole scholarships are available. Click here for the Piggy Bank Registration Form. Class is limited to 20 participants.
