The Hoffman Center presents MONOTYPE MADNESS with Lynn Thomas

Local artist Lynn Thomas to teach monotype class in October

Monotypes are prints made using printer’s inks, painted directly on a plexiglass plate, and printed on a press. Water based inks are used in this process, and are not only easy to clean up, they are a fun and forgiving medium which encourages experimentation. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

The classes will be held on 3 consecutive Wednesdays, October 19, 26 & November 2 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Lynn’s studio at the Hoffman House, across the street from the Hoffman Center. The cost is $45 per session, or $120 for all three sessions.  To register, download this registration form and mail it in to the Hoffman Center at PO Box 678, Manzanita, 97130.

The first session will introduce the inks, the tools, and the press.

The second session will provide an opportunity to work in a painterly way with brushes.

The third session will explore the use of stencils, demonstrate the viscosity method, and discuss how to set up a home studio.

Please bring an image (photo, sketch) or an idea to the first class.

For additional information about the class, contact Lynn Thomas directly at 503.812.4240.

About the Instructor

Lynn received her BA in printmaking from Marylhurst University. She taught printmaking at Pacific Northwest College of Arts in Portland from 2004-2006 and in her Portland home studio from 2004-2007. She received a Gordon Gilkey Award from the Portland Art Museum for her printmaking in 2004. After moving to Nehalem permanently in 2008, Lynn opened “Green” Printmaking studio in Wheeler where she taught several one day workshops. In 2010 she moved into a studio in the Hoffman Center. In spring of 2010 she taught a printmaking class based on the figure.

Lynn derives ideas for her monotypes from feelings, thoughts, and experiences with nature and personal relationships. Many of her prints begin with one or two textural shapes or figures. A dialogue between forms is sometimes suggested, inviting the viewer to add their own thoughts and feelings to the composition. Lynn uses various plate surfaces to develop her subject matter, including wood veneer (Nehalem Valley) and textured plexiglass (Beyond the Surface). She also likes to work using a resist method and large rollers, which allows for a greater degree to movement and rhythm in her work (New Mexico Series). Ultimately, Lynn strives to create works on paper that are interesting, thought-provoking, and beautiful.

Kids Art Show on May 26

Students from Nehalem Elementary School will demonstrate their artistic skills with an end-of-the-school-year show Thursday, May 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the school.

On display will be works created during the kids’ weekly art explorations with the Outside the Box Arts program.

-12 piece “ring” made from recycled calendars or maps

-octahedron

She frequently uses origami as an expressive therapy tool to enhance children’s self-esteem and creativity. Paper folding also has the added benefit of increasing learning skills such as sequencing, visual spatial perception, eye hand coordination and the ability to follow auditory and visual directions.

Barbara is also a paper artist who has been teaching paper folding to adults and children for the past 15 years.

Paste Paper Weekend

Instructor:  John Freethy
Saturday & Sunday April 30 & May 1
1:30 – 4:30 PM
Hoffman Center – 594 Laneda Ave.
$35 for 1 Day/ $60 for both Days

Switching over to an extended format, these two classes will each be 3 hours. The beauty of two classes in a row is that those who come to the first day will be able to do the optional second layer on their papers on the second day. It is not necessary to come to both days, but there is a discount if you do. John will be bringing many examples of what can be made with paste papers to inspire students with what they can then create with their pieces.

Students will learn how to use a mixture of paste and acrylic paint to create patterns, designs or other images on heavyweight paper. Brushes and textured tools are used to move the paint around on wet paper creating multi-layered effects. The results can be art in itself, or can be used in many other forms, such as bookmaking, origami, collage, mixed-media artwork, gift boxes, greeting cards and more.

For more information and to register, contact John via email johnfreethy@gmail.com or call him at 207-776-4868.

Paste Paper Making (with a twist)

This class takes the standard paste paper class that John has been teaching to an expanded level. He will be encouraging students to experiment with working on a larger scale this time (there will be lots of 9″x12″ paper on hand too) to see what they can create by expanding the workable area. This will also tie in to a second class, bookmaking, so that those who attend the second class already have paper to work with.

Returning students are encouraged to bring their previous work to add a second coat to, if desired. New tools will also be available for use at the class.

Date and Time:  Sunday, March 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Location:  Hoffman Center 594 Laneda Ave

Price:  $25, all materials included

There are only 4-6 spots still available (depending on table availability).  Contact John Freethy at johnfreethy@gmail.com or at 207.776.4868.

Letterpress Open Studio Hours + Volunteer Opportunity

Sarah Archer, director of the letterpress program at the Hoffman Center, will be keeping office hours in the shop every Thursday from 11am to 4pm.  This is a weekly opportunity for anyone curious about letterpress printing to stop by and learn about the process & the product, as well as an “open studio” for anyone who has taken a letterpress workshop at the Center to receive help with their independent printing projects.

The Hoffman Center’s letterpress shop boasts a 100+ year old Chandler and Price platen job press, a 26″ lever paper cutter that used to belong to the Daily Astorian (can cut up to a ream of paper at a time!), a collection of metal and wood typefaces, and a selection of antique ornaments and image blocks.  We even have a system for printing text and images from computer files.  Wondering what in the world all those terms mean?  Thought about taking a workshop in the past but unsure if letterpress is for you?  Come to the print shop during open hours, Thursdays from 11am to 4pm.

Additionally, we are are offering a work trade opportunity not just limited to Thursdays:  help organize the shop and receive free instruction in the art of letterpress at the same time!  The work includes putting type (individual letters) away as well as identifying and labeling typefaces.  This is an ideal way to begin to learn how to print and will especially interest anyone with a love of graphic design and/or history.  Contact Sarah to schedule a session (anywhere from 1 to 4 hours) :  accidentalpress at  gmail.com or (503) 739-1939
