Jocelyn Edelstein has studied modern dance, hip hop,kundalini yoga, Afro Brazilian Folkloric Dance and Capoeria for the past 10years.  Edelstein’s studies have taken her from Oregon to Brazil and back again where she has taught classes and workshops for ages ranging from 3 to 80 years old.  Edelstein is the founder of the Urban Body Project, a multi-media organization that explores the relationship between dance and community.  UBP is currently in post production for their upcoming feature length documentary, Believe The Beat. More info on her classes can be found at www.danceharvest.com.

Class Description: Intro to Dance for Kids!

This class for beginners will introduce basic movement derived from various styles, including ballet, modern, hip hop and Brazilian folkloric dance forms. Our class will use dance, games and imagination to explore movement concepts and rhythm. The class is open to pre-school children ages 3-4. Please wear clothing that is comfortable to move in. Dance shoes optional. Water bottle recommended.

Annie Naranjo-Rivera has taught both visual and performing arts classes for over 10 years. She has been blessed with the opportunities to act, direct, stage manage, choreograph, and participate in costume and set design for numerous note worthy children’s theaters for over 10 years. Naranjo-Rivera currently runs the drama program for Nea-kah-nie Middle School, where the children are preparing to put on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz this upcoming spring.In addition, Naranjo-Rivera has taught everything from playwriting, to improvisational acting, to voice with children of all ages in both Clatsop and Tillamook counties. Naranjo-Rivera runs the Hoffman Center’s Art and Drama Camp for Kids, which will be headed into it’s fourth summer this year. Class Description: Intro to the Stage for Kids!

This entry level class will allow kids to play and explore the imaginary world of the stage. We will learn about storytelling, costumes and make some of our own props to tell famous stories.Each child will learn to develop their own unique “voice” on the stage and have a blast doing it. We will practice movement, singing with instruments, will play improvisational acting games and possibly make up some games of our own! This class is open to pre-school children ages 3-4.Please wear clothing that is comfortable to move in. Water bottle recommended.

If a child is enrolled in both classes there is a $10 discount–$70 for both.

The film stars Manzanita resident Amy Steel as the intrepid Ginny Field.   She’ll be on hand to discuss the film. The event will also be an early Halloween party, and costumes are encouraged.

Story Line: Mrs. Voorhees is dead, and the infamous Camp Crystal Lake is shut down. However, an unknown assailant is stalking the camp next door. Could it be Mrs. Voorhees’ son Jason who didn’t drown in the lake 30 years before?

Come audition on Wednesday, September 28th from 5 to 8 p.m.

It’s Back!

The Hoffman Center’s first Community Talent Showcase held in January was such a success, we’re going to stage another one on Saturday, October 1st at 7 p.m. We’re encouraging everyone to consider auditioning for this fun event. In addition to musicians and singers, we’re looking for actors, dancers, jugglers, maybe even baton twirlers to strut their stuff.

Auditions will be held Wednesday, September 28th from 5 to 8 p.m. A panel of judges will select 12 to 15 acts that show a particular skill or originality to fill a fun evening. Individual acts should be appropriate for all ages and about five minutes long.

The general public will be invited to the Community Talent Showcase for a $10 admission. All proceeds will go to the Hoffman Center‘s operating budget.

The Oakland based musical duo Aquarena Springs will stop off in Manzanita Thursday July 7th for a special evening at the Hoffman Center. Local musicians The Cedar Shakes and Anne Mersereau will open the show. Admission is a mere $5, and the show starts at 7:00. Don’t miss this great night of fun.

The Hoffman Center in Manzanita will host its annual three-week Kids Summer Drama Camp August 1 – 29, with the final event to be a production of “Peter Pan.” The camp, for ages 5 – 18, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays. Tuition will be $160.

Director Annie Naranjo-Rivera will teach projection and movement and how to perform on stage. Participants will also create original artwork and costumes for the production.

The one-act stage play is based on the classic story by J. M. Barrie.

Past Hoffman Center Summer Drama Camps have featured “Cassy the Crab” and “A Thousand Cranes.”

A limited number of scholarships will be available for this year’s camp. Parents interested should ask when registering.

The Hoffman Center in Manzanita will host eight morning and afternoon Summer Art Camps for kids during the week of Aug. 1-5. All sessions will be held at the Center building at 594 Laneda Ave. in Manzanita. The classes will cost $65 per student, with a separate lab fee added on.

“Look! Learn! Listen!” a music and art class for ages 5-11 (or with instructor’s approval), will be held from 10 a.m. to noon each day and led by Lynn Thomas. Students will learn to paint what they hear in music, and also receive a violin, viola or cello to play for the week. (Lab fee $10)

“Bookbinding and Printmaking” For ages 5+, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Barbara Temple-Ayres will lead a teach making a hardbound book covered with paper the students decorate. Kids will use off-press printmaking techniques, including rubber stamps, monoprints, bubbles, chalk and marbling. (Lab fee $5)

“Illuminated Manuscripts” For ages 9+, will run from 10 a.m. to noon daily. Sarah Archer will explore the relationship between text and images, using drawing, collage, and block printing with antique wooden type. Students will turn words into works of art.

“Beginning Drawing” For ages 8-14, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Angelle Soans will teach basic drawing techniques and how to add textures using pencil, charcoal and marker in a sketchbook, which students will take home at the end of the week. (Lab Fee $10)

“Clay PlayShop” For ages 5-10, will be run from 1 to 3 p.m. daily. Antoniette Naranjo-Rivera will teach building techniques and explore surface decoration possibilities. Each student will glaze and fire his/her very own piece. ($15 lab fee)

“Intro to Stage Lighting” for ages 7-18 will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. daily. Instructor Annie Naranjo-Rivera will teach the unseen wonders of light design for the stage. Students will make their own lighting plot, then hang and focus lights to set the mood for a show.

“Creative Writing Laboratory” For ages 7-13 (or younger with instructor’s approval), will be held 1 to 3 p.m. Local poet Travis Champ will delve into the world of poetry. Students will create their own booklet of poems to take home at the end of the week. (Lab fee $5)

“A Taste of Everything” For ages 8+, will be held 1 – 3 p.m. Instructor Nicole Poole will let students experience a wide range of techniques: life drawing, printmaking, collage, sun-print making, and one day of surprises. (Lab fee $10)

Switching over to an extended format, these two classes will each be 3 hours. The beauty of two classes in a row is that those who come to the first day will be able to do the optional second layer on their papers on the second day. It is not necessary to come to both days, but there is a discount if you do. John will be bringing many examples of what can be made with paste papers to inspire students with what they can then create with their pieces.

Students will learn how to use a mixture of paste and acrylic paint to create patterns, designs or other images on heavyweight paper. Brushes and textured tools are used to move the paint around on wet paper creating multi-layered effects. The results can be art in itself, or can be used in many other forms, such as bookmaking, origami, collage, mixed-media artwork, gift boxes, greeting cards and more.

The 36th Annual Best of the Northwest Film & Video Festival

The Hoffman Center’s Manzanita Film Series will host a showing of “The Best of the 36th Northwest Film & Video Festival” at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 22. Admission is $7. Theater concessions, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase.

The collection of 14 short films was selected by the Northwest Film Center of Portland from its annual juried film festival. The total running time is 90 minutes.

The Manzanita Film Series is a program of the Hoffman Center in Manzanita. Films are screened on the fourth weekend of the month throughout the year. The Center is located at 594 Laneda Ave.

Get in the holiday spirit plus help the Food Bank

The Hoffman Center in Manzanita will host a Christmas Carol Sing Along Thursday evening, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Community members young to old are invited to attend and lend their voices to the occasion. Musicians will be on hand to accompany the singing.

 “We’ll be doing all the favorites — from holiday classics like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle Bells” to hymns like “Silent Night” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” said organizer Chip MacGregor. “There will be holiday snacks, hot apple cider, and a chance to break out those Christmas favorites from long ago.”

 The event is free, but donations to the North County Food Bank – money or non-perishable foods – can be brought to the Center that evening.

 MacGregor added, “This will be a great opportunity for everybody to rub shoulders with their neighbors and get in the Christmas spirit.”

Dust off your banjo (or whatever your talent may be...) for the Community Talent Showcase coming January 29, 2011

The Hoffman Center is looking for people talented in a wide variety of ways who would like to strut their stuff for a special Community Talent Showcase to be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011.

“We know there are a lot of gifted and talented people in our community – many with talents the rest of us don’t know about,” said organizer Vera Wildauer. “Singers, musicians, actors, orators, comedians, magicians, mind-readers, contortionists, what have you.”
