The North Coast Squid, a Journal of Local Writing, was first published in 2012 in collaboration with the North Coast Citizen and is now published by the Manzanita Writers’ Series program of the Hoffman Center. The literary magazine offers local writers and those who have a strong connection to the north Oregon coast a way to share their work in print.
We accept online submissions from writers with a connection to the north Oregon coast for fiction, poetry, and narrative nonfiction (including memoir). Submissions are judged by outside judges, authors outside the coastal area. Watch the Hoffman Blog and local announcements for annual submission deadlines and details. The next submission period is slated to open March 1, 2016.
In 2014 we added new categories in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for young writers under age 18. The published pieces were selected by the editors of Tattoo Magazine, a national award-winning high school literary and art publication based in Shoreline, WA. The magazine is advised by Andy Barker, a member of the North Coast Squid editorial team.
Artists are invited to submit work, both for the black and white interior pages and the color cover. The Squid’s editorial team selects from among those submissions.
The North Coast Squid has no advertising and is funded with sponsorships, donations, and a portion of the cover price. If you would like to donate, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or simply send a check to Hoffman Center with “Squid” in the memo line, PO Box 678, Manzanita, OR, 97130.
Current issues of the North Coast Squid can be purchased at Cloud and Leaf Bookstore and Manzanita News and Espresso in Manzanita, the Beehive in Nehalem, Lucy’s Books in Astoria, Beach Books in Seaside, the Rowboat Gallery in Pacific City. Net proceeds from the $5 cover price go towards future issues of the North Coast Squid.
