About the Writers’ Series

selected MWS authorsThe mission of the Manzanita Writers’ Series is to foster the local writing community, to promote the area’s literacy and writing programs, as well as bring well-known authors closer to the north coast reading public.

A program of the Hoffman center, the Manzanita Writers’ Series features a regional published author each month, usually on the third Saturday, March through May, and September through November. After the reading, there is a brief question and answer period, and the featured authors are invited to sell and sign their books.  In the second half of the evening, local and emerging writers can participate in an Open Mic session.

Since our launch in June 2008, we’ve been pleased to host both well-known along with newer authors, including Ursula LeGuin, Cheryl Strayed, Lidia Yuknavitch, Chelsea Cain, Jess Walter, Philip Margolin, Patrick Dewitt, Willy Vlautin, Lauren Kessler,Jennie Shortridge, Erica Bauermeister, Deborah Reed, Lindsay Hill and many others.

Readings are held at 7 p.m. in the Hoffman Center at 594 Laneda Avenue, across from the library, in Manzanita. $7 admission.

Here are a few author comments about authors’ experience at the Series:

“The Manzanita Writers Series is a fabulously good time! The scenery is wonderful, the accommodations comfortable, and the crowd–well, nothing like a room full of raucous readers!” Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain – www.garthstein.com <http://www.garthstein.com>

“I was deeply inspired by the warmth, openness, curiosity and general good spirits of everyone in attendance. You’ve accomplished something quite remarkable in providing a platform and catalyst for your region’s literary community to take shape around the events and publications that you spearhead.  An amazing and affirmative contribution to cultural vitality!” Lindsay Hill, author of Sea of Hooks
